FIDM is building on our legacy to reimagine the college as a creative business college that prepares graduates for high-level careers in tech, beauty, entertainment, and fashion. "I want to use my platform to amplify voices and inspire young creators who look like me," says Roach, who describes himself as the only Image Architect. The showstopping red carpet styles we live for from mega clients Zendaya and Kerry Washington are testaments to his talent for crafting headline-making looks. "Someone playful who loves the art of fashion and is not afraid to take risks." Design beyond … It’s not just about fashion; designers need a wide range of skills to make their presence felt—merchandising, researching fabric, even directing content.

Doing this is really hard, and it can be a mystery because no one wants to share with you their secrets, but here, so many people do share their secrets and are so helpful. I’ve made really good friends from being in this industry, so that makes me happy. Fashion has become very popular, and with all the attention it gets, it bears more responsibilities. I truly believe that it is a reflection of society, and therefore it reads the moment—it can’t make a revolution from within, but it can definitely be part of it with its own tools.

A legacy of educating for the creative industries

The game changes in an online learning environment because online-guided questions, interactive study, and one-on-one time with instructors are pillars of these courses. Your chances of performing well increase when a teacher engages with you more. This extra attention is invaluable as it enhances communication and critical thinking skills, all necessary to thrive in a fashion career. It’s the kind of experience that opens up exciting learning avenues that are hard to achieve in a traditional classroom. I think the design community in Los Angeles is amazing, and, if it weren’t amazing, I wouldn’t be doing my line.

But now that the top has been blown off the whole system, you’re like, Cool—let’s just do what we want to do the way we want to do it. Let’s say something when we have something interesting to say, and sit back when we don’t. It feels like a new time to take control of the system. Throughout my career, whenever I heard of a label having a positive company culture, it changed the way that I would think of that brand. Now that way of thinking is fanning out into society as a whole.

New to Business Strategy? Start here.

Flexibility is going to be one of the most important words—because, honestly, the future is very difficult to read. Everything must change—the vision, the strategy, and the outlook—and it must change tomorrow. When I think about the main luxury streets now, with no visitors, I don’t think there is enough emotion in the street. We need to attract a new generation to the street to give it that energy. From my vantage point as the chief design officer, I fundamentally believe that diverse voices make a difference at the design table. Diversity is exactly the texture and the perspective and the depth that we need.

The duo responsible for Regina King's stunning wardrobe is dream team Wayman Bannerman and Micah McDonald, who went into this past year with the goal of bringing some levity through their clients' fashion. "We felt it was important to lift the mood," says McDonald. "The gown was beautifully structured on her body yet felt cool and effortless," says Bannerman.

Expect those to become a fashion editor favorite while jetting across the Atlantic to the European shows next season. Huyck said she’s excited to see the works on the stage from a different perspective; oftentimes, she modeled the garments herself at conventions and fashion shows and never really got good photos of them. “Plus-size people still don’t have a lot of options for fashion, so I hope to be able to give more options for people who have trouble finding clothes in their size,” she said. Russell said her interest in fashion is to “make people feel good, regardless of what size you are.” She wants to design her own pieces, relying on recyclable fabrics for sustainability. For Russell, who also has an interest in art, designing clothes is something she has always wanted to do. While she was good at hand sewing, it was a “step-by-step” process with the sewing machine that she is now adept with.

Even as a kid, I would look forward to picking out outfits for school. Fashion and clothes were a personal passion, something that I loved, collecting vintage and going through my grandmother’s stuff, and my mom’s old stuff, but I never thought of it as a career. Going to college at 18, I thought I should do something practical—study political science or go to law school. I worked in the legal world for a couple of years, and I was a teacher the New York City public school system. But after that, I thought, I wanna do what I wanna do, and I wanna work with clothes. When I started, I opened an Etsy shop and tapped into the wholesale market of vintage dead stock.

Lanvin selected the two women behind Rooms Studio as design partners to mirror the trailblazing path of founding designer Jeanne Lanvin. The lushly lensed series opens in 1972, when the 38-year-old Lagerfeld is a ready-to-wear designer, unknown to the general public. He falls in love with a sultry dandy, Jacques de Bascher (ThĂ©odore Pellerin), who inspires him to challenge himself and act on his ambition to become the world’s most famous French fashion designer. He faces off Yves Saint Laurent (Arnaud Valois), who reigned supreme with the backing of Pierre BergĂ© (Alex Lutz), and subsequently becomes the head designer and creative director of Chanel, Fendi and his own label. This year’s annual fashion show will once again be a collaborative effort with the School of Communications and Media, featuring a live-streamed presentation.

For more than a century, Parsons School of Design has been inspired by the transformative potential of design. Today, the school’s groundbreaking academic programs carry forward that mission, making Parsons the number one design school in the U.S. and among the top three globally. At the heart of a comprehensive university — The New School — Parsons draws on a range of academic fields to deliver a uniquely interdisciplinary education enriched by the resources of its home in New York City and branch campus in Paris.

It’s because designers I work with are so generous with their resources that I have been able to get this education. The local production here, they wanna be producing things, and it’s kind of great for all designers if we can share and make sure that people here have enough work to keep that kind of work going in L.A. We have so many designer markets, things like Echo Park Craft Fair and Renegade and Row. There are all these designers hanging out with each other, and it fosters a lot of creativity and a lot of cooperativeness.

The Fashion Design courses we offer are designed to help prepare you for a career in apparel design, trend forecasting, textile creation, and brand development, providing you with the creative skills to shape the future of fashion with your unique designs. I think our work should reflect the desires of society at large. Fashion is fundamentally about desire, and I think perhaps our industry has lost track of people’s desires in recent years. Maybe we’ve been working in an echo chamber, and it’s time to step out into the real world to create stories that people can actively participate in. When we started our own retail, we knew it was the future—going to Colette, to Bergdorf, to Barneys was an incredible experience.

When the future isn’t clear, we really have to act from our values. It’s not about platitudes or virtue signaling; it’s about what we are really doing here and what we are putting into the world. We’re probably going to err on the side of utilitarianism. When I look back at Coach’s origins in working with natural vegetable leathers that are handcrafted and worked into useful and clever objects, there’s a truth there that I’ve been exploring. It’s a willingness to try different things—when systems break down, we can’t solve existing problems with the same approaches.

I wish I had done my own pieces so much earlier, but it took that long for me to see what my customers want. The best designs come when you wish some specific thing existed on the market, and you can’t find it. I’ve always been a more dressed-up person, so while nursing it was hard to wear a dress and have a baby spitting up all over everything.

As a Black man in luxury fashion, changing the notion of what luxury designers look like is a big responsibility for me to have. My story isn't one with a benefactor or conventional schooling; it's an underground story of what determination can produce. The industry isn't limited to fashion students and traditional designers; it's open to anyone bold enough to put their stake in the ground and say, "This is what I intend to do." Since starting her namesake label in 2015, she has quietly built a reputation for making Earth-friendly luxury pieces. She’s become increasingly vocal in the last few years, adjusting her focus to include sustainability from every angle, not just animal cruelty. Even the wedding dress McCartney designed for Meghan Markle’s reception was made with viscose, a fluid material made from wood pulp.
